Learn how to measure curtains easily and confidently with our step by step measuring guide
Measuring Curtain Width on a Track
Step 1: With your metal measuring tape, measure the width of the track. If you don’t have a track, measure the outside of the window frame (architrave) width. This will be your required track size.
Step 2: Add an extra 30cm to your measurement from step 1. This will allow for extra fabric to accommodate for a hand and cord-operated track. This will enable the curtains to be wrapped around the ends of the track and for the crossover arms in the middle of the track, providing additional insulation, light control and privacy.
Step 3: Select the pair of readymade curtains that is either the size of your measurement or that is the next size higher than your measurement (recommended). For example, your track/window width is 195cm + extra 30cm = 225cm wide. Therefore, you require a 240cm pair of curtains.
Measuring Curtain Width on a Rod with Rings
Step 1: Measure the rod width; do not include the end finials in your measurement if you have them. If you don’t have a rod, measure the width of the window from outside the architrave.
Step 2: Add an extra 20cm to that measurement to allow for extra fabric and coverage past the rod brackets. This will provide additional light control and insulation.
Step 3: Select the pair of readymade curtains that is either the size of your measurement or that is the next size higher than your measurement (recommended). For example, your rod/window width is 200cm + extra 20cm = 220cm wide. Therefore you require a 240cm pair of curtains.
Measuring Curtain Length on Tracks or Rods
Tracks: For tracks, measure from the top of the track (or the top of the outside of the window frame if you don’t have a track) down to your desired length. The curtains can just cover the architrave, or sit between the architrave and the floor, or go down to the floor. Select from the available lengths.
Rods: For rods with rings, measure from the bottom of the eyelet on the curtain ring (this is where the curtain hooks are inserted) down to the desired length. Select from the available lengths.
